Sustainable Development: The role of Education for its Stabilization

Abstract

The proposed paper examines the concept of sustainable development in detail. It throws light on how the schools can play a significant role in developing the notion regarding the environmental issues and concerns.This paper further attempts to explore the role of education for the stabilization of sustainable development.To achieve the required level of sustainable development, this paper will contribute how schools have to take up new role and greater responsibilities, and away to help the students to advance the knowledge, ability, and values relevant to conservation and preservation of sustainable development. The entire Educational programmes and school management should lay emphasis on the new issues so as to face the new emerging challenges of environmental concerns and sustainable development. The present schools must be engaged to discharge functions in relation to the conservation issues and sustainable development. It further examines that sustainable development can extend holistic progress beyond the foreseeable future without exhausting available and valuable resources.

Introduction

The idea of preservation of resources for upcoming generation (sustainable development) is a landmark development in the theories of environment as it  depicts in what way a society should be structure or organised in a much beneficial way as it basis on the preservation of future resources for upcoming generation. This mooted idea is roped by noted academicians various stake holders, professionals, as their ideas laced with good thoughts go like [1].The concept of sustainable development obtained global celebrity with publication of common future meaning thereby that it is to be preserved and conserved for all and requires immediate action. Sustainable development is the overarching or typical example paradigm of the United Nations. The idea of sustainable development was symbolized by  Brunt land Commission Report 1987 as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Better relationship exists between society and healthy environment that is why it has been said that prosperous society which is lot expectations and which completely depend ona good  environment to make available food and resources, portable water,  neat and clean air for its people. It is possible only when there is balance between there three spheres – society, environment and economic systems, then we can expect improved quality of life.

Definitions of sustainable development

Bruntland Commission is the World Commission on Environment and Development (defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the need of future generations to meet their own needs”

Commission regarding environmental education

The National Policy on Education 1986 described: There is urgent need to inbuilt  state of being aware of the environment to shape the national discourses pertaining to environmental education. It must incorporate all camps/ quarters of society stepping with child. The National Curriculum Framework 2005 encapsulates to be inserted and imparted based on pilot model in the different stages of the education i.e.  upper primary and secondary stage of school education, with the basis that to bring out massive sensitization pertaining to environment, and keeping in view its sensitivity.

The policy document had absolute emphasis on the subject since 1968. Importantly National Curriculum Framework- 2005 eyes on shaping about a generation which is on tenter hooks to work for it with zeal and zest. On habitat and learning which enriches as well as forms the plinth environmental education, focuses that EE with its balanced approach will create the new pattern and outsmarts sectoral thinking by multidisciplinary thought process. Furthermore, it defines that the subject matter ad nature of Environmental education will cater in building capacity for critical substance and thinking as a substitute of learning memorization.

Need and Importance of Education for Sustainable Development

Education plays very  important role in  process of Sustainable Development, it signifies that  adopting a better approach towards education with the purpose of ‘creating a civilized world for this generation and upcoming of all living beings on mother Earth’. To shape a sustainable future, it is right of every budding child to take the knowledge, skills, and values. By the process of industrialization and the concept of development, because the needs change accordingly, development for the humans as they look it as normal process. Human process became dependent on over-exploitation of our natural resource. This process in turn leads human being towards renewal of these treasured reserves and supplies is adversely affected. At this juncture schools have to play an important role to manage for this inequality demands assuming a slightly diverse school of jurisprudence. Learning centers are considered keys to our survival because it helps to develop citizens which are always ready and supportive to achieve democratic and diverse sustainable society. This idea supports the way of living which is fair to all living on the planet earth. It means to help the students to think critically and ethically at all levels, so that the way of beliefs and our cultural patterns which has led to humans towards destructive relationships which are dangerous for both human communities and natural world. The basic idea is that students should have the knowledge of ecology, of ecological systems, ecological issues, which are important issues that we support. Education will encourage and can play a pivotal role to nurture the mentality in our younger generation giving by supporting to healthy sustainable lifestyles hrough proper education. Sustainably living education can help us to change the attitudes by helping how to use the resources which do not  impact too much  on existing routines. Education helps to change the teaching-learning processing rapid changes in the climate incorporate the issues related to the environment it should be incorporated in the curriculum and to introduced it in core subjects that will help them to relate with this in the real life situations.

It is responsibility of a teacher to aware about the consequences of population explosion which is a great threat to the ecological balance, advancement in science and technology which has forced for the excessive demand on natural resources. This creates imbalance in the natural environment. So there is urgent need to check a balance between man and nature and to improve practices to reduce dependency. Sustainable development has a greater significance for earth, because it is only place in the whole universe capable of sustaining life.

Environmental literacy in the Indian school system

It was from the very beginning in the Indian education system regarding the concept Environmental education. According to traditional Indian philosophies they also stress to promote and conserve environment and to preserve natural resources. Besides they also stress on this, living in tranquility and peace  taking care for living organisms and upcoming generations visa viz pleading for various modes that are incompatible surroundings. residing in or encompasses living and non-living things and advocating developmental modes that are in harmony with the environment. India’s National policy heavily reflects on the idea of value of environmental protection: it is need of the hour to create a consciousness towards surroundings. This awareness  be obliged permeance at every fragment of the society. consciousness regarding environment will be desegregated in overall educational process.

It was also stressed on the directions of the supreme court to the education department in the whole country which includes all the institutions of education whether it is primary, secondary or higher education to make the Environmental education compulsory at each level of education. It emphasized also on the problems and issues related environment should be invoked among compulsory subjects in a phased manner. Various statutory bodies appointed by the govt. of India like  National Council for teacher Education also stressed on the Environmental Educational should be separate and compulsory course at all levels of teacher education, which includes physical as well as  vocational education cum teaching programmes for environmental education and should be compulsory paper in teacher education or in emerging Indian societies. Further ponderance on environmental education is also viewed in concentrated progrmmes or other higher institutions education training will be introduced in these learning institutions. According to (MOEF,1992)The concept of Environmental education at the school level, incorporating training for teachers shall be a significant part of educational programmes. Thus, it was considered as an important aspect of everyone’s learning because it will help them to develop civic sense, support in a mental condition regarding to a fact and awareness like the conditions where persons, animals operates.

To implement these policies and initiatives in India several efforts have been made in educational system to set up on firm basis in accordance with etiquette in the education system.. Furthermore, various strenuous efforts have been, to train thein-service and pre-serviceto make fully competent teachers who teach In the content to integrate the concepts which are related with environment and to introduce in many them in different subjects [6-7]. Besides this various divisions of an organization of education at the domestic, regional levels and non- profit organizations (NGOs) are energetically mingled in this undaunted effort.

Conclusion

School is considered miniature society as it plays pivotal position in the society since there is close relationship between school and society. Society establishes schools and schools in turn fulfills the needs and demands of society. In schools, it is the teacher who has to become a role model for the society as teacher’s role is assumed as dynamic, highly motivated and knowledgeable member of the community. A teacher develops the idea about the environment and how it is to be protected and eventually make endeavor to save the future generation.It is the teacher who can easily spread awareness in school as well as in the community at large regarding need of healthy environment by way of theoretical and practical forms. While transacting the curriculum and involving in co- curricular activities, he can highlight the horrible effects of pollution. Students should be made to understand that small creatures, birds and animals – all play significant role in preserving and sustaining healthy environment. This way, the teacher becomes an effective and powerful means in preparing the students, their guardians and the member of the society to maintain a healthy environment for their benefit as well as future generation.
